The Bulul

The Bulul, is a Filipino artifact that was used by the farmers of the village. Historic documents say that the Bulul was a Filipino rice god and if the farmers did certain chants and rituals the Bulul would give a great harvest. Some Bulul were put in museums and some became souvenirs for tourists. I learned about the Bulul in the book, “A Lolong Time Ago” by “Halo-Halo Histories”, it is a great book I recommend it.

“I made a Bulul myself out of clay and I realized, I forgot to give him ears, oh well”

This is my Bulul made out of clay, yes I did not make ears for him. It was very fun making him. My Bulul was made for the art subject. I used air-dry clay, a plastic bottle for structure and a plastic container for the bowl. The reason I made this guy was for a late Buwan Ng Wika project and for fun and art.

This is a fun project that you can try yourself. I recycled stuff made out of plastic for the Bulul to have structure. The Bululs I saw on the internet had their eyes in a squinting way most of the time. So I recreated that with diagonal line eyes, the nose gave me some problems but then I had the idea of sculpting the nose from the face. I made the Bulul smooth by rubbing the sides with a wet pencil. Don’t forget to have a place mat so the clay won’t touch the the table.
